The Airlift, an American war film that depicts the evacuation of civilians from Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War. This war film was released on September 25, 2001 in 2001. The movie is based on historical events that happened in Beirut between 1975-1976. The event began when Sunni Muslim fighters captured West Beirut and other nearby towns. During this period, Westerners were evacuated by plane from the besieged city including the staff of the American University of Beirut. The film is directed by Raja Gosnell with screen play by William Broyles Jr. The film depicts Lebanese Civil War that was fought between 1975-1990. Half the country was divided into Christian East Beirut and Muslim west Beirut. They are shown to be living in India but Sonali misses her home country and feels lonely there. They have a daughter named Amaya. Meanwhile, in the United States, an Indian man named Ranjit Katyal (played by Naseeruddin Shah) has been relocated to the Middle East after working with the United States Department of Defense for over 14 years. He is given a diplomatic post at the Embassy in Yemen so he can take care of the Indian nationals who are living in that country. His son Rafiq (played by Purab Kohli) hates his father for this and is shown to be deeply struggling with his identity as an American and an Indian.
